Dr. ThomasTo ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what is his current policy towards the disposal of heat exchangers from decommissioned nuclear power plants.
§ Mr. MoynihanThe power plant operator is responsible for management of decommissioned wastes. I expect him to make proposals for safe disposal to Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Pollution who will assess them against radiological and environmental criteria set out in the HMSO booklet "Disposal facilities on land for low and 605W intermediate level radioactive wastes: Principles for the protection of the human environment." If I am satisfied with the proposal and the assessment the operator will be authorised to proceed.
