HC Deb 19 May 1988 vol 133 cc565-6W
Sir John Biggs-Davison

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will make a statement about the purpose, scope and funding of the Spirit of Enniskillen bursaries.

Dr. Mawhinney

In introducing this bursary scheme my aim is to capture for future generations of young people the spirit of forgiveness and tolerance which emerged following the tragic bombing in Enniskillen on Remembrance Sunday last year.

The scheme will give young people from Northern Ireland the opportunity to experience at first hand, in a country of their choice, how people from diverse backgrounds can live together in peace and harmony and then use the knowledge gained to foster better community understanding and tolerance at home.

I have provided a sum of £150,000 to the King George VI Memorial Council for investment, the income from which will be made available through the Youth Committee for Northern Ireland for the award of bursaries to mixed groups of Protestant and Catholic young people selected by a special panel which I shall appoint.

Between 24 and 30 young people will be selected—equally from across the religious divide for—bursaries each year.
