To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what has been the recent trend in the number of prisoners held in police cells.

The numbers in police cells rose to a peak of 1,575 in early March. Since then, both the temporary camps which my right hon. Friend announced on 30 March have been brought into operation; and the numbers had fallen to 905 yesterday.
