HC Deb 19 May 1988 vol 133 c543W
38. Mr. Devlin

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what plans his Department has to build prisons in the northern region.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

Following last year's public expenditure survey, the prison building programme contained 26 new prisons. Seven are planned for the Prison Department's northern region: four in Lancashire (Garth, Lancaster Farms, Rochdale and Buckley Hall), two in Yorkshire (Lindholme II and Doncaster) and, one in Cheshire (Thorn Cross). One in Humberside (Full Sutton) was officially opened last month. In addition, there are four prisons in the programme for which sites have not yet been chosen. One of these may be allocated to the northern region for a local prison in the north-east.
