HC Deb 19 May 1988 vol 133 cc515-6W
Mr. Dalyell

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what study he has made of the potential dangers of radioactive decommissioning and nuclear waste management in the Caithness area.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

As part of his responsibility for radioactive waste management strategy, my right hon. and learned Friend has full regard to the need to dispose safely of wastes from any decommissioning of nuclear facilities. The studies which have been carried out both in this country and overseas indicate that decommissioning of nuclear facilities can be carried out safely on the basis of existing technology. The radiological problems which decommissioning wastes present in disposal terms are not significantly different from those of other wastes from the nuclear industry.
