HC Deb 19 May 1988 vol 133 cc570-1W
Mr. Cohen

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement about the attack on the Burmah Endeavour in the Gulf; and what representations he has made to the Iraqi Government on this matter.

Mrs. Chalker

The Burmah Endeavour, a United Kingdom-registered vessel, was hit during an attack by Iraqi aircraft on Larak Island in the southern Gulf, at 0940 hours on 14 May. The ship was set on fire but not badly damaged. There were no casualties.

The Iraqi ambassador was summoned to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office on 17 May to receive a strong protest about this premeditated, unprovoked and unlawful attack. Our ambassador in Baghdad will register a similar protest.
