HC Deb 18 May 1988 vol 133 c460W
Mr. Adley

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what information he has about the new works required to bring Stansted rail traffic into Liverpool street; and what future plans there are for diverting this traffic to St. Pancras.

Mr. David Mitchell

I understand from British Rail that it plans to complete work on the rail link to Stansted airport by January 1991, allowing it to operate a fast, direct service to Liverpool street station. The total cost, including specially built new trains, will be £45 million at today's prices. I understand that BR has no plans at present to divert any of this traffic to St. Pancras, but that it will avoid taking any action to preclude its doing so in future should the need arise.
