HC Deb 18 May 1988 vol 133 c471W
Sir Hector Monro

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what decisions have been taken on the disbursement of money to charitable bodies in Scotland following the error in the retail prices index.

Mr. Michael Forsyth

The balance of the funds available for distribution from this source to charities in Scotland is £0.696 million. My right hon. and learned Friend has decided to allocate £0.34 million to Scottish Television's Telethon Trust, health boards and the other bodies mentioned in the table. Discussions will take place with these bodies to agree arrangements for the distribution of these allocations to appropriate charitable purposes at the local level. The remaining £0.355 million will be available for allocation to individual bodies in the relevant fields and within the voluntary sector more widely to groups most likely to contain persons in the relevant categories. These groups will include the elderly, the physically and mentally handicapped and the mentally ill, single parents and children. Projects will be expected to provide some immediate and significant benefit to members of the client group concerned, for example, by increasing mobility or providing ease of access to learning, recreational or leisure opportunities. Voluntary organisations will be advised of the purposes for which grant applications may be made and the procedure to be followed in submitting applications.
