Mr. Barry Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he proposes to pay Pre-school Playgroups Association, Wales, all-Wales mental health strategy moneys; and how much, in real terms, he has paid from this source in each of the years from 1983 to 1987–88.

Mr. Grist

[holding answer 17 May 1988]: On the assumption that the hon. Gentleman is referring to the all-Wales mental handicap strategy, funding from this source has been provided direct to the Pre-school Playgroups Association (PPA) (Wales) as set out in the following table (1987–88 constant prices):

Year £
1983–84 1,415
1984–85 7,383
1985–86 27,447
1986–87 30,250
1987–88 21,500

We are currently considering an application for further funding.

As indicated in my answer to the hon. Gentleman on 10 May, at column 73, all-Wales mental handicap strategy moneys are also made available to voluntary groups, including PPA, through local authorities.
