HC Deb 18 May 1988 vol 133 cc483-4W
54. Mr. Holt

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what representations he has received seeking legislation to reorganise local government by abolishing county councils; what response he has made; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Chope

Representations have been received from two associations (the Association of District Councils and the Society of Local Authority Chief Executives), two local authorities, and three members of the public. We said that we have no plans for change; our priorities are to ensure the efficient and economical functioning of local government and its accountability to the public.
