To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment how many council homes were sold in 1987(a) to sitting tenants and (b) as empty properties in England and Wales.

In 1987 91,000 tenants bought their homes from English local authorities and new towns, who also sold 3,200 vacant dwellings. In addition, the London residuary body transferred some 5,500 homes to Thamesmead Town Limited.
