To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what is the latest estimate of costs for construction of the training village at Copehill Down in Wiltshire; if he will list the contracts that have been(a) agreed and (b) tendered for construction associated with this site; at what stage construction is at present; and if he will make a statement.

The latest estimate of the cost of the training village project at Copehill Down on Salisbury plain is £8.169 million. The main contractor for this work is ARC Construction Ltd. Other tenders for the contract were received from:

  • Balfour Beatty Ltd.
  • Cementation Construction Ltd.
  • M. J. Gleason Group Ltd.
  • Haymills (Contractors) Ltd.
  • Higgs and Hill Building Ltd.
  • The Miller Group Ltd.
  • A. Monk and Co. plc.
  • Edmund Nuttall Ltd.

The major sub-contractors are as follows:

  • Rapid Structures.
  • N. G. Bailey and Co. Ltd.
  • Blakedown Landscapes Ltd.
  • Oxford Asphalt Ltd.
  • Blackfords Services.

The construction work is about 12 per cent. complete and on present plans it is anticipated the project will finish on schedule late in 1989.
