HC Deb 18 May 1988 vol 133 cc472-3W
Mr. Teddy Taylor

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what was the total amount of canary seed imported in the most recent annual period for which figures are available; what tax was charged per ton on these imports; and what proposals the EEC has advanced for adjusting such taxes.

Mr. Donald Thompson

For the calendar year 1987 the total amount of canary seed imported into the United Kingdom was 10,300 tonnes. The import levy payable on this canary seed varied between £15.78 and £45.62 per tonne.

In its price-fixing proposal for 1988–89 the Commission of the European Communities has proposed that this import levy be aligned with that for barley which over the same period varied between £112.48 and £124.63 per tonne.
