§ 45. Mr. HardyTo ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what was the total salary bill incurred in the payment of teachers in England and Wales in the latest year for which figures are available.
§ Mrs. RumboldBased on the returns of expenditure made to the Department of the Environment by local authorities the overall expenditure on the salaries of teachers in nursery, primary, secondary and special schools in England in the financial year 1986–87, the latest year for which actual figures are available, was £5,764 million. The figure includes the employers' contributions towards national insurance and superannuation but excludes Crombie and premature retirement compensation payments.
