To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services how many people have had their blood tested for HIV, by the blood transfusion service, in the United Kingdom in each year from 1985; how many people were found to be positive and how many were then contacted; what is the current average cost to the transfusion service of an HIV test; and what other tests are also routinely undertaken and at what cost.

[holding answer 9 May 1988]: All blood donations have been tested for antibody to HIV since October 1985. In the rare event that the test is positive the donor is contacted and offered counselling. The figures are shown in the table.

[holding answer 9 May 1988]: The blood products laboratory (Elstree) currently supplies only England and Wales. Scotland has its own facility which also serves Northern Ireland. Information relating to Scotland and Northern Ireland is a matter for my right hon. and learned Friend the Secretary of State for Scotland and my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland. Where information is not held, or is not held in the form requested, this is indicated in the notes.
