To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many rail electrification schemes have been approved by Her Majesty's Government since 1983.

Since 1983 the Government have approved seven electrification schemes, worth over £500 million. In addition the Government have approved a package of Channel tunnel-related investment including some £30 million of electrification work. British Rail has itself approved a further nine smaller schemes.
