Mr. Teddy Taylor

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries arid Food what is the current tonnage of apples in intervention in the European Economic Community; and what were the comparable totals in each of the last three years.

Mr. Donald Thompson

The latest provisional figure available from the European Commission for the amount of apples withdrawn from the market under the Community's intervention arrangements for the 1987–88 season so far is 536,167 tonnes. In each of the previous years, the totals were as follows:

Tonnes
1984–85 660,902
1985–86 184,553
1986–87 354,089

Mr. Teddy Taylor

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what was the total amount of apples destroyed in the most recent annual period for which figures are available for the European Economic Community as a whole; and what was the total cost of such destruction.

Mr. Donald Thompson

The total amount of apples withdrawn from the market under the Community's intervention arrangements in 1986–87, the most recent year for which complete figures are available, was 354,089 tonnes. Of this, 105,023 tonnes found no outlets and were assumed to be spoilt or wasted. The amount of compensation paid to growers in respect of the latter tonnage was 12.5 million ecu.
