Mr. Corbyn

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations have been made by Her Majesty's ambassador to Pakistan and the Government of Pakistan concerning prison conditions.

Mr. Mellor

The Government of Pakistan are well aware of our concern for human rights in Pakistan. There has been no specific representation about prison conditions.

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what visits to prisons have been made by British embassy staff in Pakistan in the past year.

Mr. Mellor

British embassy staff have made one prison visit in the past year to see a British citizen detained in Peshawar. In addition, staff from the consulate general in Karachi have visited another British prisoner on approximately 15 occasions.

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many meetings Her Majesty's embassy in Pakistan has had with opposition political parties, human rights groups and trades unions in the last year.

Mr. Mellor

British embassy staff, including Her Majesty's ambassador, have frequent meetings with a wide range of political contacts, including opposition leaders, human rights activists and trade union leaders.
