§ 36. Mr. MarlowTo ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what representations he has received seeking an amendment to the Finance (No. 2) Bill to provide for the married persons' tax allowance to vary according to the number of dependent children; what response he has made; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Norman LamontI am not aware of any representations on this point. Child tax allowances formerly gave taxpayers a measure of support for children but were abolished in 1979 following the introduction of child benefit.
