HC Deb 12 May 1988 vol 133 cc227-8W
Mr. Macdonald

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is his policy towards the broadcasting of television programmes in Gaelic; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Renton

It is for the broadcasting authorities—the BBC and the IBA—to consider the emphasis which should be given to Gaelic broadcasting. They are responsible for the scheduling of programmes and for their content. I understand they recognise the important part Gaelic has to play in preserving the cultural heritage of Scotland.
