To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is his policy towards the proposal from the Commission of the European Communities to harmonise company tax allowances.

Mr. Lamont

I understand that preliminary draft proposals by the European Commission for harmonisation of the business tax base are at present in preparation. The Government will study the proposals and have an opportunity to comment on them when they have been communicated formally to the Council of Ministers in due course.
