To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what information he has on the average weekly earnings of a bricklayer currently working on the British Library site.

The pay of bricklayers working on the British Library project is determined by the contractor, taking into account market conditions.

The buoyancy of the construction market in London has led to keen competition for skilled bricklayers. I understand that the contractor keeps the numbers under constant review and adjusts them to meet programme targets.
