§ Mr. McLeishTo ask the Secretary of State for Employment if he will provide monthly figures from June 1986 to the most recent date for which information is available for(a) the number of employees in employment for each of the standard regions, (b) the unemployment figures by claimant count for each of the standard regions, (c) an estimation of how much of the reduction in unemployment by claimant count is a result of (i) people moving into full-time work. (ii) people moving into part-time work, (iii) community programmes and other adult schemes, (iv) people being removed from the claimant count by being offered other state benefits, (v) restart interviews leading to people removing themselves from the claimant count without work or training destination and (vii) people leaving the register as a result of claims investigations.
§ Mr. LeeFollowing is the available information. Table A gives the number of employees in employment, which is available only quarterly, for each of the standard regions in the United Kingdom from June 1986 to the latest available date. Table B similarly shows seasonally adjusted adult unemployment monthly from June 1986.
The information requested in part (c) is not available. It is impossible to make reliable estimates of the effect on the changes in the unemployment count of the various potential influences. During the period of strong economic growth and an improving jobs market, such as we are currently experiencing, many more people are encouraged to look for work. Some of the jobs were taken by people who were not previously unemployed claimants.
