§ Mr. JohnTo ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will list, for each police force in England and Wales, the clear-up rate, at the latest convenient date, of the following crimes:(a) murder and manslaughter, (b) offences against the person, (c) arson, (d) robbery, burglary and theft, (e) offences against property, including wilful and malicious damage; and if he will set out the corresponding rates for the same date five years previously.
§ Mr. Douglas Hogg[holding answer 3 May 1988]: The number of notifiable offences cleared up by the police in 1987 was 1.23 million, 9 per cent. higher than in 1982. Clear-up rates for the largest major groups of offences are listed in the following tables. More detailed analyses of offences recorded and cleared up by type of offence are generally published by chief officers of police in their annual reports, copies of which are available in the Library. For some types of offences such as homicide and arson, the annual numbers recorded and cleared up by some forces are small and subject to appreciable fluctuations, so that clear-up rates based on these numbers may be misleading.
