HL Deb 10 May 1988 vol 496 cc1117-8WA
Lord Erroll of Hale

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What steps they have taken, or are taking, to inform new or existing state pensioners of the responsibilities placed on them by Section 7 of the Taxes Management Act 1970.

The Secretary of State for Trade and Industry (Lord Young of Graffham)

Inland Revenue leaflet IR4Income Tax and Pensioners provides general guidance for pensioners about their income tax affairs, including a reminder that they should notify the tax office promptly when starting to receive a pension. It does not make specific reference to Section 7 of the Taxes Management Act 1970. Extensive publicity is planned for the changes to Section 7 introduced by Clause 112 of the Finance (No. 2) Bill 1988 when they come into effect. This will cover the effects for state pensioners, the majority of whom will have no obligation under the new provisions.
