61. Mr. Chapman

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what representations he has received about the increase in nurses' pay in 1988–89, with particular reference to those in the London area.

Mr. Newton

My right hon. Friend met representatives of the nursing professions at the time of the announcement by my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister of the Government's decision on the pay review body's recommendations. These recommendations included the introduction of London pay supplements. The representatives expressed their satisfaction that the Government have decided to implement the recommendations in full and to make available additional resources to cover the full estimated cost.
