HC Deb 10 May 1988 vol 133 cc71-2W
Mr. Ron Davies

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales (1), pursuant to his reply of 3 March,Official Report, column 662, whether initial feasibility studies on the Cardiff bay barrage scheme aided by the European regional development fund have been completed; and if the Government have now reached a view on the barrage proposal;

(2) whether initial feasibility studies on the Cardiff bay barrage scheme aided by the European regional development fund include a study of alternative barrage lines and their relative impact in terms of Government responsibilities with regard to article 4 of the directive 74/409 on the conservation of wild birds.

Mr. Peter Walker

The initial feasibility studies aided by the European regional development fund were completed by November 1986. The studies considered various barrage lines across the mouth of Cardiff harbour and the effect of such a barrage on over-wintering shorebirds. Further economic, technical and ecological studies have been undertaken and these are currently being considered before a Government view on the barrage is reached.
