§ Mr. Frank CookTo ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will list the 10 largest publicly funded research and development organisations for which he is responsible, by turnover and staffing.
Mr. JacksonGrant-in-aid funding is provided through the Department for the following organisations engaged in research and development, including research in the humanities:
- Science and Engineering Research Council
- Medical Research Council
- Natural Environment Research Council
- Agricultural and Food Research Council
- Economic and Social Research Council
- The Royal Society
- The British Academy
- The Fellowship of Engineering
The Department also funds research in universities through the block grants paid on the advice of the University Grants Committee. Information on research expenditure by university is not available.
Some research is funded through the grants-in-aid paid to the Cranfield institute of technology and the Open University.
