To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what is the present pupil-teacher ratio for(a) primary schools and (b) secondary schools in Northern Ireland.

Available information relates to the 1986–87 school year and is as follows:

Ratio

Primary¹ 23.4

Secondary² 14.9

¹ Includes nursery classes in primary schools and preparatory departments of grammar schools.

² Consists of secondary intermediate schools and secondary departments of grammar schools.
