HC Deb 09 May 1988 vol 133 c10W
Mr. Fatchett

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will call for a report from the chief constable of West Yorkshire on the implementation of the order banning marches in Leeds on 23 April; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

Decisions on how to enforce a prohibition under the Public Order Act 1986 are operational matters for the chief officer of police. I understand from the chief constable of West Yorkshire that a number of assemblies, unaffected by the prohibition on processions, took place and that these were well ordered. The West Yorkshire police are investigating complaints that, as one of these assemblies dispersed, those leaving it formed into a procession.
