HC Deb 09 May 1988 vol 133 c43W
Mr. Thurnham

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster if he will make a statement about the electrical safety campaign launched on 25 April.

Mr. Butcher

The electrical safety campaign launched on 25 April is aimed at reducing the numbers of people killed or seriously injured each year by electrocution or fires caused by electrical faults. The main focus of the campaign is to encourage people to install and use residual current devices (RCDs). These are potentially life-saving devices that operate by switching off the current almost immediately when they detect a fault. The campaign will run for 12 months and has started with the publication of a new consumer leaflet, the distribution of a promotional video, the opening of an RCD "helpline" and information bureau, and various other promotional techniques.
