HC Deb 06 May 1988 vol 132 c653W
Mr. Matthew Taylor

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will make a statement on the implications of the recent changes in the social security system for the position of firemen.

Mr. Scott

Under income support, retained (part-time) firefighters will have the first £15 of their weekly earnings disregarded instead of the full disregard that was available under supplementary benefit. Payments of bounty will be treated as capital.

Those who made the change from supplementary benefit to income support will have had the level of their benefit income protected by transitional additions.
