HC Deb 05 May 1988 vol 132 c541W
Mr. Boyes

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster what figures are available for the growth in the number of businesses in Houghton and Washington.

Mr. Atkins

Comprehensive information on the lines requested is not available. However, data collected on the setting up of new manufacturing firms employing more than 10 people show that 20 such firms have opened since January 1985 currently employing more than 1,600 people. The full employment implications of these openings, particularly the inward investment cases, have yet to fully work through. For example, excluded from this data is the forecast of an additional 2,400 jobs at Nissan to bring the total employment to 3,500 by 1992.
