§ Mr. ButlerTo ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will construct a table showing the average number of doses of drugs administered per inmate in each of Her Majesty's penal establishments in the last available year.
§ Mr. Douglas Hogg[pursuant to his reply, 20 January 1988, c. 706]: I am grateful to the hon. Member for drawing attention to an inaccuracy in that part of the information in my earlier reply which related to Her Majesty's prison, Wakefield.
The pharmacist at Wakefield is responsible for dispensing not only at that establishment but at six other establishments and his returns, on which my reply was based, represent the doses of medicine administered at the seven establishments. The information relating solely to Her Majesty's prison Wakefield is as follows:
Number of doses of medicine administered to inmates in prison service establishments in England and Wales 1 April 1986–31 March 1987 HMP Wakefield 1. Medicines available without prescription in the community 157,084 Prescription only medicines 2. Psychotropic drugs (ie antidepressants, sedatives and tranquillisers) 49,925 3. Hypnotic Drugs 16,837 4. Drugs acting on the central nervous system other than those shown in (2) and (3) 13,825 5. Other drugs and medicines 347,713
