HC Deb 04 May 1988 vol 132 c470W
69. Mr. Hind

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on the current position in the Persian Gulf.

71. Sir John Farr

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on the current situation in the Gulf.

Mr. Mellor

The situation in the Gulf is relatively quiet at the moment. Since 18 April there has been only one attack on merchant shipping. Events on 18 April reminded Iran that she cannot expect to endanger the lives and interests of non-belligerents with impunity. The Armilla patrol, British minesweepers and other friendly navies in the area continue to contribute to maintaining freedom of navigation with a high level of vigilance.
