HC Deb 04 May 1988 vol 132 c482W
Mr. Teddy Taylor

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether the recent European Council agreement on agricultural spending will have the effect a making meat available to home manufacturers and canners at prices comparable to the prices offered to foreign canners.

Mr. Donald Thompson

When the Council of Agriculture Ministers agreed on the level of imports of beef under the manufacturing balance sheet at its meeting on 8 February the Commission gave an undertaking that it recognised the need to ensure that additional supplies of beef are available to the Community meat processing industry on terms that enable Community production to be competitive with products from other sources. The recent decisions taken on agricultural spending should not affect the ability of the Commission to discharge this undertaking.
