HL Deb 04 May 1988 vol 496 c676WA
Lord Brougham and Vaux

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Why the M.4 was closed for five to six hours between Junctions 1 and 2 on Sunday 24th April.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Transport (Lord Brabazon of Tara)

Closures of five and six hours respectively on the westbound and eastbound carriageways of the M.4 were enforced by the police following a fatal accident around 12 noon on Sunday, 24th April. On this elevated section, where there are only two lanes in each direction and no hard shoulder, these closures were necessary for investigation of this particularly complex accident scene. Serious charges may be brought. Traffic was diverted to the A.4 and A.312.
