HC Deb 04 May 1988 vol 132 cc463-4W
29. Mr. Tony Lloyd

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on the current human rights situation in Guatemala.

Mr. Eggar

A number of murders and kidnappings have occurred, although it is not clear to what extent they are criminally rather than politically motivated. We accept the view of the United Nations special expert on Guatemala that it is the Government's firm political will to ensure respect for human rights and that violations are not a result of Government policy.

75. Mr. Rogers

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what instructions were sent to the British embassy in Guatemala in connection with the return of the Guatemala exiles on Monday 18 April.

Mr. Eggar

Her Majesty's ambassador was requested to monitor the situation carefully and to keep the Foreign and Commonwealth Office informed of developments.
