HC Deb 04 May 1988 vol 132 c478W
Mr. David Nicholson

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will publish in theOfficial Report figures showing at the latest available date (a) what proportion of fauns derived all their income from agriculture; (b) what proportion of those farmers' earnings were from non-agricultural employment, investment and pensions in (i) England, (ii) the south-western region and (iii) each of the counties in that region.

Mr. Donald Thompson

The latest information available is from the Inland Revenue's "Survey of Personal Incomes, 1984/85", and is given in table 4.5 of "Farm Incomes in the United Kingdom" 1988 edition. This shows that for those with a self-employment income from agriculture and horticulture in the United Kingdom:

  1. (a) 15 per cent. had no other income than that arising from self-employment (virtually all from agriculture and horticulture) and,
  2. (b) 30 per cent. had income from employment (in or out of agriculture) in addition to income from self-employment.

The further information requested is not available.
