§ Mr. Donald Thompson[holding answer 28 March 1988]: The principal objective of my Department's monitoring programme is to ensure the safety of foodstuffs. Whilst my Department is constantly reviewing its methods in the light of scientific and other developments, radioactivity levels in soils are only indirectly related to the level of radioactivity in food.
