HC Deb 29 March 1988 vol 130 cc442-3W
Mr. Goodlad

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services how many mental hospital beds have been closed in each health region in England and Wales in each of the last 10 years.

Mrs. Currie

The table shows the number of beds provided by mental handicap and mental illness hospitals in England that were approved for closure between 1979 and December 1986 (the latest date for which figures are available) by region and year. Information on hospitals in Wales is a matter for my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Wales.

Mrs. Currie

The table shows the numbers of discharges from mental illness hospitals and units in England for the years 1980–86. Data for earlier years could be obtained only at disproportionate cost. It should be noted that some patients are admitted for a hospital stay more than once during the year. The information for Wales is the responsibility of my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Wales.
