Mr. Robin Cook

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will give the average length of time spent in hospital by(a) each private pay-bed patient and (b) each National Health Service patient; and if he will break this figure down by each specialty and for each region and the special health authorities.

[holding answer 1 March 1988]: I am sorry I cannot give the hon. Member all the information he seeks. The numbers in the central data sample are too small for reliable estimates to be made for private patients at regional level. The available information is given in the following table: all figures are for 1985.
