To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how many people are engaged in Government employment and training measures in Wales; what was the figure for expenditure on the YTS in 1986 and 1987; and if he will make a statement.

The number of people engaged in the following programmes in Wales at 31 January 1988 is as follows:

No figures are available for the voluntary projects programme. For the adult training programme, the only available information is that between 1 April 1987 and 31 January 1988 a total of 18,495 took part.

Expenditure on YTS in the 1986–87 financial year was £51,985,000. The latest estimate of expenditure for the 1987–88 financial year is £58,092,000.
