HC Deb 28 March 1988 vol 130 c337W
Mr. Kennedy

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what sterilisation standards are laid down for general practitioners; what steps are taken by his Department to monitor them; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Newton

Sterilisation standards for general practitioners are not laid down centrally. This is a matter of good professional practice and advice is available in publications such as the British Pharmacopoeia.

Mr. Kennedy

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what steps are taken by his Department to seek to minimise the dangers of cross-infection in general practitioners' surgeries; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Newton

General practitioners are required under their terms of service to provide proper accommodation for the provision of general medical services. This includes adequate safeguards to minimise the dangers of cross-infection. Family practitioner committees have powers to inspect general practitioners' surgeries to ensure that they meet the proper standards.
