35. Mr. Gregory

39. Mr. David Shaw

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy what representations he has received about the level of financial support planned for the coal mining industry in 1988–89 and 1989–90.

Mr. Parkinson

I have noted the representations made in the House about the future level of financial support for the coal mining industry.

British Coal's external financing limit for 1988–89 has been set at £670 million. It is envisaged that this will be financed as follows:

£ million
Restructuring grant 116.0
Other non-deficit grants 273.5
Net borrowing 280.5
670.0

The external financing limit for 1989–90 has not yet been agreed.
