To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what is the highest traffic count of(a) all vehicles and (b) heavy commercial vehicles on urban roads that has been reported to his Department in the last two years; what was the date of the count; and where was the road.

A classified traffic count of 12 hours duration (7 am to 7 pm) for one day is taken as part of the Department's rotating traffic census. Counts are taken on one sixth of major road links each year so that all links are covered in six years. The classification "urban" is no longer used, being replaced by "built-up" where a section of road has a speed limit of 40 mph or less.

The highest traffic counts on built-up roads recorded in 1986 and 1987 are:
