To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the average amount of time a person in:(a) the United Kingdom and (b) the west midlands will now have to wait for a National Health Service operation for eyes or ears.

The information for England for the latest available year is given in the table. Information for the rest of the United Kingdom is the responsibility of my right hon. Friends, the Secretaries of State for Wales and Northern Ireland, and my right hon. and learned Friend the Secretary of State for Scotland.

Estimated median interval (in weeks) between the time a patient is

placed on the waiting list and admission to a NHS non-psychiatric

hospital for operations in 1985.
