Statistics of the type requested are not held centrally. Such figures as are available for residential accommodation in the community reflect the total provision made by local authorities and voluntary bodies for mentally handicapped and mentally ill people already in the community as well as for ex-patients of mental hospitals. Provision of places for people with specific mental illnesses is not identified separately. The numbers of residential places made available in each of the last 10 years by local authorities and voluntary bodies was as follows:

31 March Mental handicap Mental illness
1978 11,063
1979 1,087 168
1980 1,093 209
1981 1,155 218
1982 1,242 283
21983 1,491 485
1984 1,665 559
1985 1,773 608
1986 1,951 644
31987 2,129 674
1 1978 statistics covered the mentally handicapped and mentally ill together.
2 From 1983 onwards, statistics included details of provision in other establishments, such as group homes, of which local authorities were aware.
3 1987 figures are provisional.
