§ Mr. StrawTo ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will list in theOfficial Report the dates and details of all reviews of the Inner London education authority carried out since 1964 (a) by Government and (b) by other bodies and individuals; and if he will place copies of reports of such reviews in the Library.
§ Mr. Kenneth Baker[holding answer 21 March 1988]: The report on this subject by the Royal Commission on Local Government in England was published in 1968. My Department published a review by Her Majesty's inspectorate of educational provision in inner London in 1980. This was followed by an internal review, the conclusions of which were reported to the House by the then Secretary of State on 4 February 1981 at column 296. My predecessor made a further announcement on the subject on 5 April 1984 at column 1124, in the context of the White Paper, "Streamlining the Cities". I am arranging that copies of the two centrally published reports are available in the Library of the House.
There have been many surveys carried out by outside bodies and individuals. Amongst the major ones are:
No choice but to go: the case for the abolition of the Inner London Education Authority", Bow Publications, 1973;The Marshall inquiry on Greater London, GLC, 1978;Arrangements for the provision, administration and financing of education in inner London", ILEA, 1980;Report of the Committee on Education in Inner London, Conservative Party, 1980;The Inner London Education Authority after the abolition of the Greater London Council".
