HC Deb 25 March 1988 vol 130 c230W
Mr. Heffer

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department who paid the total cost of the extradition proceedings concerning the defendants in the Heysel stadium case to be held in Belgium; what was the total cost; and what the costs of the Merseyside police were.

Mr. John Patten

My reply to the hon. Member on 14 March gave the amounts so far identified as expenditure to be met by central Government. The £30,000 of police costs mentioned in that answer will be reimbursed by the Crown Prosecution Service. In addition, the Merseyside police have incurred expenditure of £182,000 which falls to be paid by the police authority, and is part of the expenditure in respect of which the authority receives grant under the Police Act 1964. The full cost of the case will be known only when legal aid costs borne by the Lord Chancellor's Department are settled.
